GUM CARE
Gums are made of soft skin that cover, protect, and support your teeth, and consistent gum care can help your teeth last a lifetime. Generally, practicing good oral hygiene and scheduling routine dentist appointments are the best ways to maintain your gum health. However, if not cared for properly, you may attract plaque and bacteria that irritate the gums. If left untreated, gum disease can damage the internal structures of teeth and may eventually result in tooth loss.

While gum disease is one of the leading causes of missing teeth, gum deterioration can be prevented through comprehensive at-home and in-office gum care. In fact, many cases of gum disease can be treated without the need for surgery. If you are worried about the health of your gums, make an appointment at Masterpiece Dental Studio to talk to Dr. Vascimini about your different options and treatment plans.
Dr. Vascimini encourages several different practices to improve gum health, both at home and in the office. Depending on the severity and progression of gum disease, Dr. Vascimini may recommend a deep scaling or root planing procedure, a course of antibiotic therapy, or antiseptic toothpaste and mouthwash to stop gum disease in its tracks without resorting to surgery.
A scaling and root planing procedure, also known as a deep cleaning, is used to treat gum disease that has progressed past gingivitis. This treatment consists of the removal of plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth, in addition to the area around and just under the gum line. After the scaling of the tooth is completed, your dental hygienist will then begin root planing, which consists of cleaning below the gum line and smoothing out the teeth roots to help the gums reattach to the tooth. Depending on the severity of gum disease and your personal preference, Dr. Vascimini may apply a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.

In some cases, Dr. Vascimini may recommend antibiotic treatment independently or in conjunction with scaling and root planing procedure. Antibiotics may reduce or eliminate bacteria development and support reattachment between teeth and gums. These treatments will vary depending on each patient’s preferences and gum disease progression.
Effective gum care starts and ends with practicing good oral hygiene to prevent the onset and development of gum disease. Dr. Vascimini encourages brushing and flossing every day, in addition to regular dental cleanings to prevent the development of gum disease.
